Reading about counselling for gay men has limitations. It can sound easy in theory, but it is hard in practice.
That's why we take a Learn By Doing approach to counselling training.
We build confidence and competence in delivering counselling for gay men. A win-win-win for trainee, organization and clients.
The client is the expert on the content.
The counsellor is the expert on the process.
Nobody knows a client's life and motivations better than the person themselves.
Our counselling task is to guide the client toward their own motivations to change while building skills to set them up for success.
So the counsellor must be the expert on the counselling process in order to help the client (expert) on the content of their goals.
Counsellors are not responsible for the client's change.
The counsellor is responsible for providing a space and process that facilitates the client's desired change.
This insight and approach unburdens the counsellor and reduces burnout and staff turnover.
