The Problem

Frontline staff in queer and trans communities are often expected to support people through:

  • Mental health challenges
  • Trauma
  • Substance use
  • HIV and chronic illness
  • Systemic stigma and marginalization

But most haven’t had access to structured counselling training.

So staff are left to figure it out in real time — in high-stakes, emotionally complex situations.

What We Do

We provide structured, skills-based counselling training designed specifically for queer-serving organizations.

Our programs help staff:

  • Respond effectively in real conversations
  • Stay grounded in emotionally intense situations
  • Support change without pressure or advice-giving
  • Build trust quickly with community members

This is not passive learning.

It’s practical, interactive, and grounded in real-world work.

How It Works

Our flagship program is a:

20-week | 40-hour live training (Zoom-based)

Participants learn through:

  • Brief, focused teaching
  • Small group practice
  • Real-time coaching
  • Structured feedback

Each session includes rotating roles:

  • Counsellor
  • Client
  • Observer (coder)

This ensures participants don’t just understand the skills — they develop them through practice.

What Staff Learn

Participants build capacity in:

  • Open-ended questions
  • Reflective listening (simple and complex reflections)
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • Recognizing and responding to change talk
  • Working with ambivalence and resistance
  • Trauma-informed communication

They also learn structured tools they can use immediately in their work.

Why This Matters

Without training, staff often:

  • Feel unsure how to respond
  • Default to advice-giving
  • Overextend themselves emotionally
  • Miss opportunities to support meaningful change

With training, staff:

  • Feel more confident and grounded
  • Stay within role boundaries
  • Build stronger relationships with clients
  • Support more effective outcomes

Impact for Organizations

Organizations that complete our training often report:

  • Increased staff confidence
  • More consistent quality of support across teams
  • Improved client engagement
  • Better handling of complex situations
  • Reduced burnout

Who We Work With

We work with organizations across the United States, Canada and globally, including:

  • LGBTQ+ community organizations
  • HIV/AIDS service organizations
  • Harm reduction programs
  • Peer support teams
